Friday night, July 18th....Just a evening of relaxing. Barbara and I went to a little restaurant and had a bowl of shrimp and roasted corn bisque (sp?)...yummy, very good! Afterwards, we went downtown to the French Quarter and had beignets and coffee from Cafe Du Monde....It was very good. We brought some back to Paul but he didn't want them so we gave them to Eric. Watched a little TV and early to bed as we will have a full day tomorrow.

Saturday.......Up early to meet Randy and Jill.....we are heading to Avery Island, the place where Tabasco is made. First, we had to stop by Baton Rouge at a furniture store where Jill left a picture to be repaired. After we left the furniture store, we stopped by a Burger King (supposed to be "fast food") to have lunch.........Pastor and I both was very unhappy with the service....s l o w! We continued on to Avery Island. Check out the website:

It was very interesting but they only work Monday-Thursday so nothing was happening in the factory. It was still interesting and we got a few free samples. After the tour, we went to the company store where they had everything you would want concerning Tabasco.....from the 6 different sauces to pepper jelly (Good!) and even Tabasco flavored ice cream! We toured around to Cajun music and spent a good bit of time in the store (of course, we bought a few things) and finally sat out on the porch in rockers just relaxing, listening to Randy singing praises to the Cajun music.

After the company store, we went to the Jungle Gardens and toured this area of gardens....seeing egrets, alligators, a lot of plants and flowers plus a beautiful drive through the gardens. We had a great time with Randy and Jill. Once we finished, we headed to a Pat's Fisherman Wharf restaurant in Henderson, LA. It was the best Cajun food that we have ever had in any restaurant in Louisiana..bar none.

It was great. After we rolled out of the restaurant, we headed back to the church. It was a good day and great to get away from the demands of the relief efforts. It did a world of good for Randy and Jill to get away. We arrived back and retired for the evening.

Sunday....Sunday morning service was excellent and great. The worship was wonderful and Pastor's message was very good. If you remember the party we went to last week of Pastor's cousin where we celebrated his 60th birthday.....Paul and his wife, Cheryl, was in service this morning. It was good seeing them again. After service, we were invited out to Pastor's house for a BBQ with Paul and Cheryl. Randy cooked the steaks out on the new deck and we had a fantastic lunch. Randy's sister, Nancy, was also there. We enjoyed our time of fellowship. At around 4pm, Paul received a call from his family and his grandson had been taken to the hospital and they left to be with the family. I had also received a call from Michelle, my daughter, to inform me that Tony had been taken to the ER in Oklahoma City for a possible kidney problem. He had been having headaches and his face, hands and leg were swelling up.
They diagnosed him with extremely high blood pressure (We found out that he had been in the ER earlier on Thursday night with blood pressure of 203 and they sent him home!). His blood pressure again near 200 and very bad headaches. I talked to my ex later and found out they were going to do a sonogram of his kidney...remember, he has only one as he had lost the other to cancer, a few years ago. So, after getting our call and having Pastor and Jill pray for him, we went back to the RV. We continued to try to get information by calling the hospital but all we got was that he was having tests being done. We call home and had Kim put his name on our
church's prayer chain. We didn't get much more information so we retired for the night.

Monday.....After breakfast, Barbara went into the office to help Randy direct the teams to the different jobs. She is a real help to him by organizing all the jobs to be done with the teams' skill levels. I am real proud of her. I started trying to find out what I could about Tony. I talked to the nurses and Tony's Mom and didn't get any definitive answers....more tests, including a cat scan on his head. To keep my mind off of Tony, I started working on a slide presentation of our trip to China....Jill wanted us to give a talk on our trip to the City of Hope Youth Group. Barbara worked with the teams and I worked on the slide show the rest of the day.....We both are very concerned about Tony and keep praying for him. We also was receiving updates on my niece's husband, Larry, and his struggles with his ongoing problems with his fight with cancer......We should keep them both in prayer. God is good and, no matter what happens, he is in control!

Monday night, we went to a area-wide prayer meeting where about 8 churches comes together in a visible sign of unity and pray for many things. Randy's church furnished the worship and each Pastor got up and led the people in corporate prayer for whatever was on their hearts. It was great....however, not long enough. But, it is powerful when all these churches get together and show their unity....it will change the atmosphere of the area and things will be done for the kingdom. After the service, we went with Pastor and Jill and two of the interns to a frozen custard place and had dessert.

Tuesday......I finally reached Tony at the hospital (I had been calling the wrong number) and he said he was being released. All the tests (sonar and cat scans) were negative and the problem was his doctor had told him he could take Alieve for pain and he had been taking it all along for aches and pain. The doctors now told him this would definitely affect his kidney functions and causing his blood pressure and swelling problems. His blood pressure was lower and the doctor was prescribing meds to control the pressure plus some meds he can safely take for aches and pain. We will continue to pray for a complete healing.

Barbara again went into the office to work with Randy and the teams. I finished the slide presentation and Barbara and I presented it to half the team in the afternoon. They were very interested in all that we had seen and done in China. We also explained to them about the religious persecution going on there prior to the Olympics. They asked a lot of questions and it was a lot of fun interacting with them.

Around 3pm, Randy asked if Barbara and I would go to the Home Depot and get a revised estimate for one of the homes that the Salvation Army will be furnishing the funds to finish. Remember?....Barbara had gone last week to help the lady pick out all the carpet, tile, cabinets, etc. We had to make some changes because some of the items exceeded the guidelines. It was quick as we had already made some arrangement for dinner.

You all remember Tammi....the cook for 2 years here at the Church? Today, she wanted for us to go with her for a Chinese dinner at a buffet. We found out later that it was her birthday.....Happy birthday, Tammi! She and her 10 year old son, Austin, went with us. We had a good dinner.......as always, we had too much to eat. It was very good. After dinner, we came home, got the dogs and went to the Church basketball game....The fans were there and we were ready for the other team. This was a sister church and everyone knew each other. It was a "friendly" rivalry but an intense game. However, our team wasn't quite ready as we got beat BUT it was close....only 3 points separated the teams at the end of the game. We all had a good time.

Wednesday......this morning continued with another team arriving last night from Lancaster, CA.......some of the team members were here two years ago when we were here. It was like "old home week"...it is good seeing the people again and hearing them talking of all the changes that has been done. Barbara now has to work with more than 70 people in getting them assigned working all over the Parish.

This morning, we gave our China presentation to the other half of the Corp Youth team. Again, they were very inquisitive and interested. We had a good time with them. Again, we stressed the persecution of the Christians in China to inform them of what is happening in the world.

If you watched the news about New Orleans today, you heard about 400,000 gallons of fuel being dumped into the Mississippi River from an accident involving a tanker and a fuel barge this morning. We have heard rumblings about a fresh water shortage in this area in the next couple of days. So, we went to the local store and picked up 66 gallons of water to have for the teams in case the water shortage happens. Adullam Christian Fellowship may become another water distribution center when and if it happens.

Wednesday night is another night of Pastor's teaching. It is really good and this is the last one that we will be here for.....we are going to miss it a lot. It is now 9pm and we are retire to the night. So, this brings you up to date of what is happening here in St. Bernard Parish......

Well, this blog is long again..........sorry.

July 12th, Saturday late afternoon.......Pastor Randy invited us to go with his family to his cousin's 60th birthday celebration in La Place. Pastor's sister, Nancy, rode with us and we headed out about 6pm. It was about a 45 minute drive. It was a big party and, of course, we didn't know anybody. But, we had fun....AND there was lots and lots and lots of food. A lot of people were dressed in 60s outfits....he is an optometrist so he had a lot of 60s glasses (John Lennon style) for people to wear. We had a good time. We returned around 11pm and retired for the night.

Sunday....into church for the morning service. Great worship.....one of the teams from Wisconsin helped with worship...Curtis played the guitar and sang AND Bryon played the soprano sax.....wonderful. This is one instrument that I love and Bryon was very good. Pastor preached on righteousness and it was very good. We really enjoy his preaching. After service, Jill had made reservations for a Sunday buffet at the Court of Two Sisters restaurant in the French Quarter. It was very good.......lots of crawfish, shrimp and fish dishes (New Orleans style) along with the beef, chicken and turkey. Desserts included the normal stuff plus Bananas Foster, bread pudding with praline sauce and pecan pie. We not only had a lot of good food but a good time of fellowship with Randy and Jill. After we returned from stuffing ourselves, we relaxed and rested. Later in the afternoon, we went out to Randy and Jill's house to doing some travel planning. Their family is going to Branson for a family camp. They are going early and we are going to meet them to do some shows before the camp starts. We planned this trip with them. We made arrangement to go to the Passion Play in Eureka, AR and the Noah's Ark play in Branson. Barbara also got to see the decking that we had been working on. We returned back to the RV for the evening.

Monday......We had a couple of teams come in and Barbara worked with Pastor in getting the teams assigned to specific jobs. She had called the people last week to set these jobs up. Back to reality and finishing the deck.....We now believe that it will be at least Tuesday before we finish. Eric was not feeling well so it was just Paul and I. We got a lot of decking put down. OK, it is HOT HOT HOT and humid. It takes about 15 minutes and a person is soaked. My tan is looking good.

After we finished the day, we revised our completion date....to Wednesday noon. We finished around 4pm so Barbara and I could run some errands. We needed to go to Walmart and check out my Iphone....it has some dead spots....It rained on us going and coming, making the traffic very slow. I had hoped to return in time for prayer but we didn't get home until after 8pm. The heat and humidity zaps the strength out of a person....so we retired early.

Tuesday......Barbara went in to meet with Pastor and the team leaders....the Wisconsin team and a team from Tennessee that this is the 13th time working here. They have helped this area a lot. The Pastor, leading the group, is tattooed with a shaved head, along with other tattooed members AND they are the nicest people and very hard workers. It is great to see all types of the Body of Christ come together for "like purposes" to work. Barbara calls the people needing the help and then works with Randy to send the teams out.

Ok, Eric is back with us as we head to the house to work on the decking. Each day, we stop at the local ice vending machine to get ice for the ice chest with our water.....we go through almost a case of water each day. We make a lot of good progress today finishing the rest of the fascia on the lake side. We got most of the decking done when we called it a day. Jill and Randy came out to view our progress and Jill fed a few of the ducks. We should be finished by noon on Wednesday...then a time to rest.

Tonight, the awesome basketball team from Adullam Christian Fellowship played another game. We had a good crowd watching. They came out flat and couldn't hit a shot and fell behind. At the end of the second quarter, they had come back to within three points. After halftime, the team started to play better and the lead changed back and forth never getting more than three points separating the teams. At the end, the church's team survived by one point. It was a good game. They always play at 9pm so this was a late night. Back to the RV for the night.

Wednesday......Barbara gets in and helps get the teams going, makes a few calls and then has a little time to go to Curves for a workout. I have had only one time that I tried a workout at the gym....too tired. Hopefully, once the deck is finished, I can so a little exercising.

Today is the final day of working on the deck.....yeah sure! We started and finished up the rest of the decking boards by noon. We had lunch and then started on the ladder on the extended dock area and the railing. The ladder is a "one-man" job so Paul was working on the ladder from the boat......with the sun beating down and reflecting off the water.....no clouds just the sun beaming down. Eric and I picked up the trash, empty water bottles, remaining unused boards. After the ladder, we assisted Paul in building the railings on the extended dock. We finished on the deck around 4pm and headed back tired and hot. Everything was done on the actual building but Paul wanted to return the next day and sand some rough spot on the deck and round off the edges and grind off some of the exposed screws that was showing through the fascia around the dock. It is finished.

Tonight, Pastor continues to teach his Wednesday night lessons. He is teaching on basic beliefs starting with the Creation and talking on the "Gap" theory and "Instantaneous Creation" theory. He is doing a great job and it is very interesting and thought provoking. After service, Barbara and I went out to a frozen custard place and had a small treat. Then home to retire.

Thursday......Barbara still has her daily job in helping get the teams out. I refused to do any work today.....especially in the hot sun! I went in later to watch Barbara do her thing as I relaxed. I then got my desktop out of the storage in the RV and set it up in the office to do a little work. I had to synchronize my iphone with my computer as I had not done this since we left CA. I updated the software and did some cleanup since I will have to possibly exchange the Iphone if they can't repair it (you know....the dead spots on the touch screen). At lunch, Jill, Colin, Barbara and I went out for Sushi.......here in St. Bernard Parrish! It was good....even Barbara ate some raw salmon on her sushi roll. She loved it. After lunch, we continued doing a little catch-up on things and not working too hard. The team from Tennessee ran into Tammi.....the lady that did all the cooking for the teams and community when they fed the people.....and asked her if she could come back and make some Gumbo......and she did and we had gumbo tonight and it was delicious! Thanks Pastor Doug from Tennessee!

After dinner, we went out to Pastor's house for a small farewell party for one of the interns, Jenny, that is leaving tomorrow. They had cake and ice cream for her. This leaves three interns to help with the teams. They are the go-between the teams and Pastor as related to lodging, meals and other general things. This helps relieve some of the pressure off the Pastor.

Friday....again, another day to catch-up. In our devotions each day, we are going through the Old Testament and we have missed a couple of day and we get all caught up. All of the teams have left, so I am blogging and Barbara is doing laundry.

It is past noon and so I am now caught up with you......OK......it wouldn't be right if I didn't show our "girls" and how they spend the day while we are working..Aren't they still cute?

OK, this may be a long one.....it has been a week since I last blogged! Here goes-

July 5th, 2008 - Saturday afternoon...continuing...after updating my blog, we decided to find a place to eat. We went to 4 places and they were all closed for the holiday weekend. We ended up at Popeyes. It was good but fried....not good for the body but good for the taste buds! After dinner, we went back to the RV and settled in for the evening.

Sunday....up and ready for church. We had a great time at church. The worship was awesome and Pastor preached and it was good. The people here is so friendly...that is one reason we enjoy being here so much. After service, we went out to eat at Zea's Restaurant....one of our favorite places here. The roasted corn grits is great. Adam and Melissa Gaye went with us.....they are the Royal Rangers and Missionette leaders at the church.....a wonderful young couple that we met last year and have enjoyed their friendship. We had a good lunch. We came back to the church to relax a little. The church has a basketball team that play in a church league and they were to practice this afternoon at 5pm. Barbara is developing a sore throat so she was going to just lay around and try to rest. I went over to the gym - this is the one which was just starting to be restored last year when we left. It is a gym that has a full basketball court, weight area, concession stand, boxing ring, punching bags and, of course, lockers and showers for men and women. Adjacent to the gym is a soccer/football field for youth leagues. I used the exercise bike. The team showed up but another team was practicing so they had to wait a little. They decided to scrimmage with the other team so they rotated player in and out. Melissa Gaye joined me on the bike and we had a good talk while we peddled for 30 minutes. I went to the weight area and lifted some weights. Before I left, I asked Melissa if she wanted to come over to the RV until the practice was over and Adam was ready to go home.. She did and came home with me. The practice was to go an hour or so but they decided to play longer. We had a wonderful visit with Melissa, had a little coffee and caught up with things since we had left last year. Adam arrived around 10pm......the time went fast as we just enjoyed the visit. On to bed to rest for the following week......oh, did we have a surprise in the amount of work.

Monday......Today, Barbara went into the church office and dictated her notes on the Habitat For Humanity issues (from the phone calls she had made last week). Randy needed those to present to the Parish President for his review. Barbara continues to help where she is needed in the office.

Today, Paul, Eric and I started on the deck that will run the entire width of Pastor's property. The new lawn (finished last week) and this deck are the two remaining large projects that Pastor needs to get finished so they can, once again, enjoy their home and feel they are completely "back-to-normal"! Anyway, we had gone to the lumber yard last week and had brought the wood to the home and unloaded it with the help of the Pennsylvania team. We started laying out the basic frame and using 2x3 inch stakes....this way we could determine where to dig the holes for the 4x4 posts to support the deck. The Pastor's desire is to have a ten foot deck xgoing the total width with a small "overhang" over the side of the lake. The lake has pilings and "walls" (boards) to contain the lake. Of course, the lake wall is not straight so it too some planning. We thought we could finish Wednesday or Thursday, at the latest. Once we got out basic layout done, we started putting in the deck frame. We used the pilings to attach the deck to on the lake side and 4x4 posts to support it. It was tedious work in the hot sun and humid weather. At the end of the first day, we knew that it would be done, not on Wednesday, on Thursday. We finished around 5pm and I headed home.

Barbara was still fighting a sore throat and I picked up some Ni-Quill for her and got some take out food for dinner. Monday night is prayer night and I went in for prayer. There was 15-20 people and it was good. On to bed for the next day.

Tuesday....Barbara helped Jill grade some of the testing of the "Core" group. The City of Hope (the humanitarian arm of the church) received a federal grant to work with "at-risk" young people in the area. They teach the young people skills necessary to go out and and work......computer skills, business planning, personal finance, etc. As I had stated earlier, they made a proposal to beautify the Katrina Memorial and the Parish President accepted their proposal. Pastor wants Barbara to work with the City of Hope Office to help where she can. The lady, Cindy, will be leaving and Barbara will be working some of her jobs.

I met Paul and Eric and we started another day of work. Today, we identified where we wanted to put the 4x4 posts and got up most of the main framing..the "24-inch center" floor joists are going slowly. We worked on the framing all day and started to lay out the framing for the 4 foot by 4 foot extension out over the water - for the boat dock - a little lower than the main deck. Today, we are still hoping to finish on Thursday. The heat really drains you and when we finished at around 4pm, we were beat.

Tonight, the church's basketball team played. It was played in a gym not too far from the church. The game started at 9pm and it was fun.....the other team led most of the first half. The second half, our team came on strong and maintained a small lead for the last few minutes and finally won with a 2-point margin.

Wednesday....Barbara went in with Cindy to learn a little of the City of Hope office work. She also made more calls to people that needed help with their homes. There is still a lot of work to be done.

Again, we went out to Pastor's house to continue with the decking. Today, we got the auger again and started sinking the holes for the 4x4 posts. Eric started digging and after the day's rental, had made 38 holes for the 4x4 posts. We started cutting the posts, mixing the concrete and setting the posts for over half of them. Again, a hard day of heat and humidity.

Tonight, Pastor Randy is starting a Wednesday night service to teach a course that will commission some of the church people for ministry. We went in and listened to the teaching. It is going to be a great series of teachings and Pastor said he would send us the CDs. He had a good turnout and more will start attending once the word gets out.

Thursday.....Barbara continues to help in the office, doing whatever is needed from making phone calls to grading papers for Jill. She is a great help to all the activities in the church and the outside ministries of what the church is doing. Barbara also took Kristan (one of the four interns) to the clinic. She has not been feeling good. This took 2 and 1/2 hours. She later picked up a cake for a small graduation party for the Core young people that graduated phase I of the program. She also washed clothes.

Today, we finally realized that the crooked line of the lake side requires us to make the length of the deck to be approximately 11 feet long.....so we had to take the 10-foot boards back and get 12-footers......We are fortunate to have the Pennsylvania team to deliver them and unload the lumber for us. We also determined that we would not be finished on Friday but will be sometime on Monday or Tuesday. Every job that we have been involved with here in New Orleans becomes a much bigger job than originally planned. Today, we finally planned out the extension dock and added another 7 holes (by hand with a post hole digger) and set all but the last six posts. We also finished the 10 x 10 foot deck for the BBQ.

Tonight, we went out to a Mexican restaurant.....very authentic as most of the people could only speak Spanish....it was OK but not as good as our restaurants in California. I was very tired and ready for bed.

Friday.....Barbara wasn't needed in the office so she decided to do things for herself......a little ironing, a manicure and a pedicure, some keys copied and just relaxing.

Back to the deck.......today, we started putting on the decking boards and extending the fascia boards on the lakeside. We also finished all the concrete work by setting all the remaining posts for the support.....a total of 45 posts. This deck will survive many Katrinas or whatever the weather throws at it. It will be solid. We finished at around 5pm and headed back to the church.

Tonight, Melissa and Adam hosted a "game night" and we went to their house for snacks and games. We had a great time of food, fellowship and games. Adam pulled out some of his card tricks......he is actually very good and does some fantastic card tricks. Home by midnight and time to crash.

Saturday.....a day to catch up with rest, blogging and just "chilling"! It is now 2:30pm and I am ready to send this out.

Hopefully, in the next few days, I will send "before and after" pictures of the church. Melissa gave me copies of some pictures of the church just after Katrina. Stay tuned.......

Sunday evening, June 29, 2008.....After lunch, Randy and Jill took us around the lake to see how things are coming back. We didn't notice a lot of things at first but you can definitely see some progress. After our tour, we went back to the RV and settled in for the night.

Monday.....Up early for our walk.....it is humid at 6:45am but we walked about 40 minutes, about 2 and 1/2 miles. Back in the RV for breakfast and devotion and into the church for our first work day. Barbara worked with Pastor Randy calling some of the people trying to set up places to work next week when the teams start coming in. I did a little work on my computer and tried to get Internet wireless signal in my RV. Couldn't work it out. We had it easy today. Pastor Jill's Mother is in the hospital because she had fallen and broke her hip. She had a hip replacement and still in the hospital. Randy called and asked if we wanted to go to the hospital with them to visit. We did and saw all of her family there and we had a good visit. After the visit, we went out to eat at a great restaurant.

Tuesday.....Barbara worked in the office to call some of the Habitat for Humanity people to see how those houses are doing. Most of them are not too happy with how slow things are happening. She spent most of the day calling the 45 people and talking to them. She is trying to document what has happened. In some cases, work has been started and left undone for months.

Paul and Eric went to Mississippi to get some sod. We are going to sod the yard at Pastor's house and also build a deck in the backyard, next to the lake. I drove the truck to Home Depot and picked up a sod cutter and a auger (to dig the holes for the decking). I arrived at Pastor's house and we started removing the old sod. Of course, the sod cutter did not work and we had to remove the grass by hand. Paul and Eric arrived and we got the sod removed from one side of the yard. This took all day and we finally finished for the day. I took the tools back to Home Depot and got refunded for the broken sod cutter. After dinner, I took Pastor Randy and his son, Randy, Jr. to the airport for a one-day trip to Dallas to record some radio spots for an upcoming meeting.

Wednesday.......Paul, Eric and I went to Pastor's house to start preparing the yard for the sod. We had to get it down before the rains started. We had about 8 scoops of compost to put down under the sod. Jill wanted the grass to be taller that the sidewalk and slope down to the walkway. We put all the compost down and laid the sod on one side before the rains came. The grass was as high as we could make it with the compost that we had. I left Paul and Eric early to finish the sod so Barbara and I could go pick up Pastor Randy and his son. We dropped them off at the church and Barbara fixed dinner. I was tired - I haven't worked this much physically since I left Louisiana last year.

Thursday.....Barbara went with Pastor and Jill to the Parish president's office to talk to him about a proposal to beautify the memorial with the young kids in the program that the City of Hope runs.

Paul, Eric and I arrived at Pastor's house to find the sod removed. Pastor decided the lawn was not high enough so we went to the nursery to get more compost. We got 15 more scoops! We returned back to the house and started putting down the compost and then laid the sod......We, again, make it before the rains came. We finished both sides of the yard and then the rains came with a vengeance for about 30 minutes. Then, we left and went back to the RV to eat. Again, another hard day of work....but I enjoyed it.

Friday, the 4th of July......We slept in because no work today...just relaxing. We have been invited to a BBQ at Greg and Cheryl Rentz's home (they live next door to Pastor Randy and Jill). We went to the BBQ and had an abundance of food, drinks and desserts....It was yummy...ribs, chicken, hot dogs, red beans and rice, potato salad, baked beans, chips, dips, carrot cake, pineapple enriched angel food cake and red velvet cupcakes! Some of the adults and most of the kids spent a lot of time in the pool as we sat around and talked. Around 3pm, a rain came in like a hurricane and it rained for about 45 minutes...then the sun came out and everything was OK except for the chairs in the pool. After the rain, we went back outside and talked some more. Three of the guys even went out on the lake for a little fishing. We left around 7pm and went back to the RV. We met a team that had just arrived and it was a team from Pennsylvania that had been here working 2 years ago when we were here. It was good seeing them again. We returned back to the RV in time to raise the shades and watch the fireworks at the local park.

Saturday......The team from Pennsylvania wanted to work so Pastor Randy came by and offered to let them finish the sod work. I went out to see if they needed help and there was plenty of help so I returned back at the RV. I tried to get a haircut but all the shops were closed so we decided to kick back and relax. We had lunch and now I am updating this blog.

I know this is a little detailed but it is my journal and I need to know what and when I did things.......bear with me.
